KHON2 Morning Show

The Oahu SPCA is excited to announce the first day of our new weekly TV segment on the KHON2 Morning Show will begin tomorrow, March 1.  Our segment will air at about 7:50 am, right after the veterinarian's segment.  Every Tuesday morning we will have the incredible opportunity to feature one dog who's looking for a forever home.  The segment will include photos and a brief story about the animal in the hopes that someone watching will pick up the phone, or pass on the word to others they know.  Through the generosity of KHON2, our shelter dogs will now be seen on television by thousands each week!

Tune in tomorrow morning to see which of our many deserving dogs is featured first!

Update on Rowdy (Jackson)

We have news from Rowdy's (now Jackson's) parents on his condition:

"The radiologist and two vets concur that Jackson has a rare condition called Teratology of Fallot, which according to Kahala Pet Hospital is inoperable.  At most little Jackson will live 1 to 2 years, but his life expectancy is really unknown.  They told us he could have a heart attack tomorrow  or pass out and not wake up.  They also said there may be medications that can help his body deal with the heart issues, but they will have to do some research and get back to us.  I did some research online last night and there are cases where they have preformed open heart surgery to repair the damaged areas as well surgeries to put a shunt, to open up the vessel so more oxygen can get into the blood stream.  The doctors and radiologist said that his condition is so rare that they have only seen it in text books."

We were hoping for much better news for the little guy!  However, the Oahu SPCA is still raising funds for his ongoing care and remain hopeful about his condition.  As of this morning the ticker at http://www.oahuspca.org/ showed a running total of $1,380 raised for Jackson!!

Mahalo to everyone for their tremendous support!!

Rowdy Needs Heart Surgery!

Rowdy, an energetic little puppy who was adopted a couple of weeks ago, has been found to have a life threatening heart murmur.  A loving family is taking care of him, but they can not afford the $3,000 to $5,000 surgery to repair his heart.  We are trying to raise enough money to save this little guy's life... so if you can help (even a little) please click on the link below to donate.  Hopefully we can all help little Rowdy survive.
Rowdy and his three littermates were fostered under the care of Stephanie, one of our amazing forster parents.  His mom is still a stray and we are trying our best to catch her.  Rowdy was recently featured at a Petco Pearl City adoption day where he warmed the hearts of many passersby.  Although he was not taken home that day, he was adopted shortly afterward.

Happy Endings

The shelter is packed to the max, but it is good to know there is a steady stream of families coming in to adopt our amazing animals.  The number of stray, abused, and neglected animals we see on a daily basis is staggering.  There are so many loving pets in shelters who need a second chance at happiness and we appreciate all of you who have chosen to adopt rather than buy your pets!

We's also like to recognize all of the great people who participate in our foster program, caring for lucky dogs or cats until they find forever homes.  Many of our animals blossom in a home environment and become much more desirable candidates for adoption because of the good work our foster parents do.  Peaches (shown below) is one of our most recent foster dogs who was adopted at Petco Pearl City last weekend.

And even when people cannot have animals in their homes, we are so thankful for those who choose to make donations of time, supplies, or money instead.  On behalf of all the grateful faces below, thank you to everyone who helps to keep our shelter going!!

Island Palm Communities Grant

The Oahu SPCA was recently honored at a special luncheon in January as one of the recipients to receive a community grant of $1000 from Island Palm Communities LLC.  Each year, the organization selects two recipients with the criteria that the non-profit group chosen must be  from an organization that one of their  employee volunteers with the goal of encouraging social responsibility and recognizing those who give back to the community.  On behalf of the staff and volunteers and all the animals at the shelter, we extend our gratitude and warmest mahalo to volunteer Mara Hollaway (third from left) who also received recognition during the check presentation on Friday.  Janet O'Connor (second from the left) was on hand to represent the Oahu SPCA.

To add more great news to this event, the dogs featured at the luncheon - Bambi and Carrie - have since been adopted.

Support SB 1424 Today!

Please support the Hawaiian Humane Society as they lobby for SB 1424 today!

Chaining Dogs (Senate Bill 1424)

This bill will make it illegal to tie up a dog on a chain that's less than 6 feet long or use a chain that's more than 10% of the dog's weight. A swivel must be on one end or the other.

Support SB 1424 RELATING TO OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC ORDER
TODAY, Feb. 10 at 10:15 am at State Capitol Conference Room 016

·    Support SB 1424, which would make it illegal to tie up a dog under certain conditions.
·    A dog kept chained in one spot for hours, days, months or even years suffers immense psychological damage.
·    An otherwise friendly and docile dog, when kept continuously chained, becomes neurotic, unhappy, anxious and often aggressive. A chained animal is caught in a vicious cycle; frustrated by long periods of boredom and social isolation, he becomes a neurotic shell of his former self—further deterring human interaction and kindness.
·    A chained dog suffers the frustration of watching the world go by in isolation—a cruel fate for what is by nature a highly social animal.
·    The U. S. Department of Agriculture has concluded that continuous confinement of dogs by a tether is inhumane. A tether significantly restricts a dog's movement. A tether can also become tangled around or hooked on the dog's shelter structure or other objects, further restricting the dog's movement and potentially causing injury.
·    More than 100 communities in more than 30 states have passed laws that regulate the practice of tethering animals.

Bacardi Rock Coconut Launch

On January 24, Bacardi held a launch party at Anna's for its new rum flavor - Bacardi Rock Coconut.  In addition to printing many complimentary full color brochures for the shelter in the past, the company also allowed the Oahu SPCA to join them at the launch party.
Above- Jody, Abbey, and Stephanie enjoy the festivities with friends.  Below- Some of our volunteers (Kelley, Kelly, and Linda) promote the shelter at the event and educate attendees on rescue and adoption.
Thank you to our friends at Bacardi for their support of the Oahu SPCA!  We had a blast!

New Love

Many people come to the shelter looking for a new love to fill their hearts, including recent visitor Caroline Hitch.  Caroline and her cat, Tiffany, spent 16 long and happy years together before Tiffany recently passed of liver disease.  It took some time, but one Sunday morning Caroline decided to check out the local shelters and meet some new feline friends.

Baby Love, a gray tabby girl, caught Caroline's eye due to her similar coloring to Tiffany.  Our shelter first received Baby Love as an abandoned 6 week old kitten in September 2009.  She was fostered at first then eventually adopted.  However, her first family had to return her when they moved to a place that did not allow animals.

As all smart adopters should, Caroline took her time getting to know Baby Love and also visited other shelters to find the cat best suited to her personality and lifestyle.  We were very happy to see Caroline return in the afternoon to adopt Baby Love!  On behalf of all the volunteers and staff at the Oahu SPCA, we wish this couple endless happiness as they start a new chapter together in their Waikele home!!

...We also hope that people continue to spread the word about the Oahu SPCA and our incredible variety of cats and kittens.  Some of our felines are posted online here, but the best way to find your new love is to visit us.  (Don't forget the two-for-one adoption fee special going on right now!)
