Sony Open Recap

Thank you to everyone who visited our booth at the Sony Open on 1/14, 1/15 and 1/16.  Over the course of the weekend we were able to spread the word about the Oahu SPCA to hundreds of people as they visited the Hawaii Wellness Directory’s tent.  We also informed the public about the health benefits of pets, such as:
  1. Lower blood pressure
  2. Promote daily exercise
  3. Lower cholesterol
  4. Reduce stress
  5. Boost immune system
  6. Promote socialization
  7. Help prevent heart disease
  8. Predict seizures
  9. Comfort the elderly
  10. Fight depression
  11. Provide companionship
  12. Aid in illness recovery
It was lots of fun meeting so many fellow animal lovers and informing them about our services and available animals.  If every person who passed through the tent told one friend about the Oahu SPCA, just imagine how many new people would know to adopt animals here, volunteer, or donate to our cause!

Congratulations to our drawing prize winners:
Randy A., Lisa H., Trisha A., Jason M., Maureen M., and Keaka C.

And thank you to our drawing prize donators:
Roy's Ko Olina, Ko Olina Golf Club, and Swedish and Integrative Massage Therapy

And a big mahalo to our event sponsors:

Leihoku Elementary Service Project

Students from Leihoku Elementary School in Waianae recently finalized a student learning service project that began last fall culminating in successfully raising more than $1,300 in supplies and cash donations for the Oahu SPCA.  The program consisted of three elements for the students to learn about including educating themselves and others about animal abuse, earning money to raise donations and budgeting for supplies and then concluding with a field trip to the shelter on Wednesday, January 19.  They were also encouraged to invite a friend to attend so they could share what they learned and experience firsthand the animal abuse problems.

The shelter volunteers and staff were on hand to give tours of the dog and cat areas and also educate the 80 students and their teachers about the problem of animal abuse and neglect around the Waianae Coast and how the shelter works to rescue and rehabilitate the hundreds of dogs and cats before finding them foster or adoptable homes.  “We are truly grateful to the teachers who supported the students in their project and the hard work and enthusiasm that the children had with making this such a successful event,” said Linda Vannatta, OSPCA board member and volunteer.  “It was a pleasure for us to share with them about how they can make a difference in educating others about animal abuse and how they can make a difference to help solve this problem.”

Flood at the Shelter

Late on Wednesday, January 12, the island experienced a crazy storm we will not soon forget.  The Oahu SPCA shelter was pummeled with rain which soon filled the entire area (including the inside of the shelter) with two inches of water!!  Staff members Steve and Abbey worked hard throughout the night and into the next day unclogging storm drains and sweeping out water.  We applaud their heroic efforts and cannot thank them enough for their dedication!
Throughout Thursday we sent out requests for volunteers to help save the shelter, and boy did they answer!  In addition to the Kapolei Fire Department, we had about 30 hardworking volunteers all over the shelter drying things out and stacking sand bags in case of more rain.  It took all day, but by 6:45 pm on Thursday the shelter was almost back to normal operations.
The animals were a bit cranky (as anyone would be with no sleep and a flooded home) but the afternoon walkers did an excellent job of restoring the daily routine and calming the animals' nerves.  Staff member Kevin said that by afternoon feeding time most had regained their appetites and were recovering just fine.
We are so touched by the overwhelming response to help our shelter and our animals.  There aren't enough words to express our gratitude.  As you can see from the pictures, operations are pretty much back to normal now.  However, we have to keep a close eye on the dry wall inside the office area in order to prevent a mold outbreak.  Specialists came to the facility to prep the walls for proper drying, but only time will tell if this will be successful.
Again, thank you to everyone who came to our aid or who spread word that help was needed!!

Third Time's a Charm

Goldie is one lucky lady because she and her owner, Randy Gillet, are living proof that the third time really is a charm!  Her story is one that many dogs on Oahu experience, although many are still waiting to find their happy ending.
According to Randy, Goldie's first encounter with a shelter was at the Hawaiian Humane Society where she was adopted out to an unknown family.  Unfortunately that home did not last long for Goldie.

A doctor and his wife soon found her wandering around Ala Moana suffering from mange, and brought her back to the Hawaiian Humane Society only to find she had been there once already.  The couple tried their best to keep Goldie, but due to size restrictions for dogs at their apartment building it became difficult to go unnoticed.

Goldie was then brought to the Oahu SPCA, where she lay waiting for her third attempt at a forever home.  Coincidentally, Randy was riding past the shelter on his motorcycle and decided to pull in and check it out.  As with many people who adopt rescued animals, Randy felt a connection with Goldie and couldn't resist bringing her home.

We are proud to report that the pair have been living happily ever after in their home in Waipahu for over a year now.  In their spare time you might find Goldie and Randy hiking the island's many trails, or coming back to the Oahu SPCA to visit the staff and meet new dogs.

Thank you to Randy Gillet and the many others out there who have given our animals a second (or third) chance at finding true happiness!

Happy Endings

Over the weekend the Oahu SPCA adopted out 12 dogs and found foster-to-adopt homes for 4 more.  Here are a few of their forever grateful faces!  What an incredible blessing not only for these fortunate pups, but for the new faces we can now bring in and save as well!

Home Sweet Home

The best part of our work is getting to see the smiling faces of happy pets and their new owners.  Just four weeks ago, an extremely weak and skinny Blitzen came to the Oahu SPCA in a cardboard box.  Today, he left a bigger, stronger, happy-go-lucky pup with his new parents: Raishell and Dexter Williams.
Blitzen was brought to the shelter as a stray on December 5.  He was very underweight and lethargic, and sat meekly in a large cardboard box.  It was heartbreaking to look into his eyes.  At the end of that day our Adoption & Foster Coordinator, Jessica, was driving home when she felt the strong urge to return to the shelter to check on him one more time.  Lo and behold... Jessica returned to the distinct smell of Parvo.

Left untreated, Parvo can kill a puppy in days.  Thankfully Jessica was able to quickly diagnose Blitzen then rush him to an emergency vet facility for treatment.  They kept a close eye on him for 3 or 4 days before he received the OK to return to the shelter.  By the time he was back at the OSPCA he was a completely different puppy, and in the weeks to follow Blitzen's sweet nature really began to shine.

Raishell Williams, who serves in the army at Schoefield, came to the Oahu SPCA looking for a loving young pup to join she and her husband, Dexter.  They had both owned dogs growing up in Houston, Texas and were hopeful that their next friend may be at the OSPCA.  As Raishell walked past the cages observing each dog she could not help but notice Blitzen's calm demeanor.  He was not phased by all the barking and commotion around him.

Who could resist those handsome grey eyes?  It wasn't long before she and Blitzen would be hopping in the car to go home and greet Dexter upon his return from work at Wheeler.  What a happy homecoming for the Williams family!
